Departments
The City of Milpitas is made up of fourteen (14) departments. Each department has specific duties and tasks that are important to the overall operation of the city. These departments provide essential day-to-day services to residents and businesses in the Milpitas community.

Building Safety & Housing
The Building Safety & Housing Department is committed to protect the lives and safety of the residents of Milpitas, to preserve the quality of life and contribute to the City’s economic development. It also supports sustainable and inclusive communities by facilitating preservation and creation of affordable housing, preventing displacement, and coordinating unhoused services.

City Attorney
The City Attorney is the chief legal advisor for the City of Milpitas, the Milpitas Housing Authority, and the Milpitas Finance Authority. The City Attorney’s Office provides legal representation and analysis and guidance to the City Council, City Manager, City departments, and all appointed boards and commissions, at the highest level of professionalism.

City Clerk
The City Clerk’s Office holds many statutory responsibilities and ensures compliance with a number of important laws aimed at safeguarding democracy and public transparency like the Brown Act, the Election Code, the Political Reform Act and the Public Records Act. It also supports all City Council meetings and ensures timely and accurate sharing of materials for those meetings.

City Manager
The City Manager's Office is committed to providing the highest levels of service to the Milpitas community. It is responsible for implementing and supporting City Council direction, managing day-to-day operations of the City, and providing leadership and professional management to the organization to ensure a healthy and thriving community now and in the future.

Economic Development
The Office of Economic Development strives to ensure a vibrant and thriving Milpitas by facilitating and supporting business retention, expansion and attraction, and workforce development. The Office also manages real estate assets and promotes the City through marketing and branding initiatives.

Engineering
The Engineering Department is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Milpitas with well-engineered, high-quality infrastructure projects and safeguarding resources and the environment. The Department is also responsible for supporting flood management and public infrastructure for private development projects.

Finance
The Finance Department oversees the fiscal responsibilities of the City and is committed to the City’s fiscal sustainability and stewardship by working with the City Council, staff, and the community and providing excellent customer services.

Fire
The Fire Department is committed to the preservation of life, property, and the environment within the Milpitas community. The Department is responsible for fire suppression, emergency medical and rescue services, hazardous materials emergency response, coordination of City-wide disaster response efforts, enforcement of code and regulations, and investigation of fire cause, arson and other emergency events.

Human Resources
The Human Resources Department is committed to recruiting and retaining highly qualified individuals; providing an environment that is diverse, safe, and inclusive; and establishing policies and practices that treat employees with respect, while maintaining compliance with labor laws and labor agreements.

Information Technology
The Information Technology Department is committed to providing innovative, reliable, secure, and cost-effective technology solutions to ensure the highest level of service to the community and departments. The services provided by the Department include telecommunications, data processing, desktop support, Geographic Information System (GIS) and technology systems management.

Planning
The Planning Department seeks to create and maintain a high quality of life for Milpitas residents through enforcement of land use, architectural design, and environmental regulations. The Department is responsible for guiding and regulating long and short-term physical and economic development for the benefit of present and future generations.

Police
The Police Department works hard to serve and protect the community. The Department is committed to the protection of lives and property by working with the community and providing professional and responsive police services.

Public Works
The Public Works Department is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for the Milpitas community. The Department operates and maintains the City's infrastructure and facilities including public streets, utilities, parks, street landscaping, City vehicles, and City buildings and it also oversees and implements key environmental services and sustainability programs, including the Climate Action Plan.

Recreation & Community Services
The Recreation and Community Services Department is committed to enriching the community through exceptional recreational programs and community services. The Department offers a wide variety of classes and programs, hosts events which bring the Milpitas community together, leads the City’s Public Art program, and administers the Milpitas Assistance Program and other social services for the most vulnerable residents.
