Did you know transportation makes up over 50% of Milpitas’ greenhouse gas emissions? Electric vehicles (EVs) are a great way to transition away from fossil fuels and live a more sustainable lifestyle. In Milpitas, Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE) provides clean energy, so charging and driving your EV produces minimal greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Driving an EV provides other environmental and health benefits, such as reducing air pollutants and the risk of respiratory health issues.
In a typical all-electric vehicle, the internal system contains an electric motor instead of an internal combustion engine and a large traction battery pack. This battery is recharged when the EV is connect to the standing charger. Since EVs do not use internal combustion engines, they do not contain a fuel tank or release exhaust.

Driving your own EV isn't the only way to get around emission-free! Carpooling and using active transportation methods, such as biking or walking, are great ways to avoid traffic and parking fees, and save money on gas, and reduce local air pollution and GHG emissions. Additionally, the Bay Area has an extensive public transit network with several options available in Milpitas. Using alternative transportation methods provide countless benefits, like increasing physical activity, providing opportunities to explore the community, and saving money!
Public transportation can make our community more climate resilient by reducing the amount of greenhouse gases and pollutants released from single person commutes. Caltrain and BART trains will be 100% electric in near future. Additionally, a portion of VTA's fleet is comprised of their new zero emission busses. In additional using public transportation reduces congestion on our city streets and roads, improving quality of life.
The SMART shuttle service offers an affordable on-demand rideshare service to easily connect you to local public transit stations. All residents are able to use the service for local daily trips to transit stations, school, shopping, or other spots around town. This is a convenient and economical way to get to Bart or other VTA transit hubs in Milpitas.
The Milpitas SMART program uses vehicles that are ADA-accessible and are equipped to transport wheelchairs and scooters.
