There are several ways to prepare and protect property from the hazards of flooding. The following examples may or may not be economically feasible or practical for every situation:
- Provide adequate drainage paths around structures.
- Elevate or relocate mechanical and electrical equipment and appliances to an area that is less likely to be damaged in the event of flooding.
- Move essential personal items and valuables to an area that is less likely to be damaged in the event of flooding.
- Keep materials such as sandbags, plywood, and plastic sheeting handy for emergency waterproofing.
- Sandbags can be obtained from the City of Milpitas Public Works Maintenance locations (bags are provided and patrons fill the bags using their own shovels):
- Milpitas Sports Center: 1325 E Calaveras Boulevard
- Hall Memorial Park: 304 La Honda Drive
- Contact the Santa Clara Valley Water District, Phone:408-265-2600
- Anchor the structure to prevent flotation, collapse, or lateral movement.
- Elevate homes so that the lowest floor is a minimum of 1 foot above the base flood elevation.
