Senate Bill 1383

Milpitas Guide to Senate Bill (SB) 1383 - California's New Organics Diversion Law

Effective January 1, 2022, Senate Bill 1383 is a new state law that requires organic material be diverted away from landfills and surplus food be made available to food insecure communities. Milpitas Municipal Code Chapter 200 - Solid Waste Management enforces the Senate Bill 1383 regulations.

Organic waste accounts for 18% of waste going to landfills (6 million tons). By 2025, California aims to reduce 75% of organic waste in landfills and save at least 20% of uneaten food to feed those in need, instead of letting it go to waste. View this flyer to learn more English or Spanish.
