On November 2, 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed the King Holiday Bill into law, officially establishing the third Monday in January as a federal holiday to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a champion for civil rights. This day stands out as the only federal holiday recognized as a National Day of Service, encouraging people across the nation to engage in volunteerism and community support.

In Milpitas, we are proud to continue this tradition of service through the Milpitas Volunteer Program, where individuals contribute their time and talents in various ways. Volunteers play a vital role in community service programs, park cleanups, emergency preparedness efforts, and other special projects that align with their personal passions. Their commitment enables the City to enhance services without increasing costs while providing residents with opportunities to learn new skills, build connections, and gain valuable work experience.
