The City of Milpitas fully honors the rights of our residents to gather, to speak out about what is important, and to convey their feelings regarding needed change in our community and in our country. It is especially vital in this city, which is one of the first integrated communities in America with a history of diversity and progressivism. The roots of the recent protests, including in Milpitas, are an effort to fight social injustices and provide an environment of equality for everyone. Witnessing the killing of George Floyd, in Minneapolis, at the hands of individuals sworn to protect him has laid bare the fact that society is in need of drastic change, including holding individuals and government accountable for their policies and actions. The City of Milpitas believes in social justice and fair treatment for all members of our community. Oppression and inexcusable violence cannot be tolerated in any corner of this community, of this state or of this country. We must all do better, and we are committed to leading the conversations that will result in real change.
Sincerely,
Mayor Rich Tran, City Manager Steve McHarris, and Police Chief Armando Corpuz
