All lanes of Montague Expressway have reopened following the emergency closure of westbound lanes due to a sinkhole. Initially, two westbound lanes, east of Trade Zone, were closed on Friday, January 11, evening; however, early Saturday morning, upon further evaluation, a larger underground issue was discovered, causing the immediate closure of the full three westbound lanes of Montague. Throughout the weekend, traffic was detoured through the neighborhood and the public was asked to avoid the area as emergency crews worked to repair the roadway.
County of Santa Clara Roads and Airports Department staff along with the contractor teams, including crew from the City of Milpitas Department of Public Works, worked throughout the weekend to repair the area of the sinkhole in advance of the original estimate of reopening Monday evening. Road crews are now removing equipment from the surrounding streets and the area will be clear of construction equipment tonight and ready for traffic Monday morning.
The sinkhole was approximately 25 ft. by 25 ft. and 12 ft. deep. Repairs to the roadway included digging out the sinkhole area, stabilizing the soil underneath, back filling the sinkhole to the surface, and paving the surface of the roadway.
The City of Milpitas again extends appreciation to the County, and other utility partners, for their quick response to the issue and working around the clock to allow the roadway to reopen prior to the Monday commute. The City also extends appreciation to the public for their cooperation in avoiding the area and patience as the emergency work was conducted.
