Property Protection Measures

There are several ways to prepare and protect property from the hazards of flooding. The following examples may or may not be economically feasible or practical for every situation:

  • Provide adequate drainage paths around structures.
  • Elevate or relocate mechanical and electrical equipment and appliances to an area that is less likely to be damaged in the event of flooding.
  • Move essential personal items and valuables to an area that is less likely to be damaged in the event of flooding.
  • Keep materials such as sandbags, plywood, and plastic sheeting handy for emergency waterproofing.
  • Sandbags can be obtained from the City of Milpitas Public Works Maintenance locations:
  • Corporation Yard: 1265 North Milpitas Boulevard (408) 586-2600
  • Milpitas Sports Center: 1325 E. Calaveras Blvd,
  • Hall Memorial Park: 304 La Honda Drive
  • Contact the Santa Clara Valley Water District (408) 265-2600
  • Bags are provided and patrons fill the bags using their own shovels.
  • Anchor the structure to prevent flotation, collapse, or lateral movement.
  • Elevate homes so that the lowest floor is a minimum of 1 foot above the base flood elevation.
