Black History Month
On Wednesday, February 6, a flag raising ceremony was held at César Chavez Plaza to honor Black History Month. Visit the City’s Facebook page to see the video of the flag being raised, which will fly through the rest of the month. On February 19, the winners of the Black History Month Poetry Contest will be honored at the City Council meeting.
Milpitas Sports Center Master Plan
Join us and be part of the discussion on the plan for future improvements, amenities and accessibility in the Sports Center Complex. Illegal Encampment Cleared near Highway 880 at Montague Exit
The Milpitas Police Department coordinated with Caltrans to clean-up an illegal encampment that was near the off-ramp of Highway 880, northbound from the Montague exit. After filing a clean-up request with Caltrans, who holds responsibility for overpasses/underpasses/freeways, it was determined that the area was within the jurisdiction of the City of San Jose; nevertheless, the Milpitas Police Department assessed the area and confirmed this week that it had been cleared. Per standard procedure, a notice was posted prior to the clearing, including contact information of social service agencies.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
FlexFactor 2019
The City of Milpitas, in partnership with the Milpitas Unified School District, Evergreen Valley College and NextFlex, America’s Flexible Hybrid Electronics Manufacturing Institute are coordinating FlexFactor 2019. FlexFactor is a month-long program run by NextFlex that exposes high school students to the vast range of professional opportunities within advanced manufacturing and innovation. This project-based learning approach is integrated into an existing high school classroom, providing a complementary learning structure to support existing learning objectives. Small teams of students identify a human health or performance related problem, conceptualize a device to solve it, and package their concept into a viable business model. Students tour both a local manufacturer and Evergreen Valley College to better understand their career opportunities in manufacturing and the educational path to get them there. The program ends with presentations by the teams of students in front of a panel of experts where they present their products and business plans.
Manufacturing Day leads to High School Internships
Manufacturing Day is an annual celebration of modern manufacturing meant to encourage the next generation of manufacturers. On Friday, October 5, 2018, local high school students toured two local manufacturers headquartered in Milpitas, including View – manufacturer of a new generation of smart windows. Inspired by the technology being developed at View, students from Calaveras Hills High School will be applying for internships with View’s engineering team. Manufacturing Day is just one activity that the City coordinates to help provide career opportunities for local students and support the development of talent needed by local companies.

California Police Activities League (PAL) Regional Directors Meeting
On Tuesday, February 5, the Police Department hosted the California Police Activities League (PAL) Regional Directors meeting in the Police Department Community Room. There were about thirty participants in attendance, including representatives from the following:

Breakfast with a Cop
The Milpitas Police Department is hosting Breakfast with a Cop on Saturday, February 16 at Christy’s Donuts (1291 E. Calaveras Blvd) from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The community is invited to enjoy a donut on us while you have a chance to ask questions, voice concerns, and get to know the officers serving the community. Tip-A-Cop Fundraising Event
In conjunction with the Special Olympics of Northern California, the Milpitas Police Department is hosting a Tip-a-Cop fundraising event where police officers will be serving the customers at Black Angus Steakhouse (275 Ranch Dr. Milpitas) and collecting donations. All proceeds will benefit the Special Olympics of Northern California. We hope to see you there, February 27, 2019, 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT)
The Milpitas Office of Emergency Services wants to empower the residents of Milpitas to take care of themselves and their families. The Milpitas CERT program teaches attendees disaster medical triage and treatment, search and rescue, fire suppression and utility controls, disaster psychology, hazardous materials identification, and hands-only CPR. BUILDING PERMITS AND OCCUPANCY
Building permits were issued to the following:
- Western Digital, existing (SanDisk) research & development of flash memory business, for tenant improvements at their facility located at 901 Sandisk Dr. at an estimated construction cost of $937,500.
- Tico Construction Company Inc., for tenant improvements at the vacant building in preparation for future tenant move-in located at 1621 Barber Ln. at an estimated construction cost of $811,000.
- Shabuya, for the tenant improvements of a new Japanese restaurant located at 84 Ranch Dr. at an estimated construction cost of $450,000.
A Building permit application was submitted by the following:
- Eagle Pools, Inc., for construction of swimming pool & spa for The Summerhill Apartments, 333 multi-family units in a 5-story residential with commercial development located at 1500 Centre Pointe Dr. at an estimated construction cost of $212,000.
The following business have received final inspection and are now open for operation:
- Smile Solutions, a dental office located at 991 Montague Expy.
- Semitran Inc., an electrical repair business relocated from San Jose to 1025 Pecten Ct.
- Spanidea Systems LLC., a software development company located at 1525 McCarthy Blvd.
CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
Metro Flats, 108-unit condo-style residential development located at 1401 S Milpitas Blvd.: One more 4-story building with a total of 6 units were finalized at the development, bringing it to a total of 12 completed units in the development.
TDK Headway, located at 497 S Hillview Dr.: To allow an earlier start of operation, a temporary occupancy permit was issued for clean-room expansion area to TDK Headway, a designer and manufacturer of recording heads for high performance hard disk drives.
